French handmade mixed lace throw, c.1900
The romantic boudoir throw was purchased years ago from a French woman in Philadelphia. After WWII and the death of her husband (British nobility), she came to live in America with her sister. The lace throw was one of her treasured keepsakes.
It is fashioned from a mixture of handmade lace: Brussels bobbin lace, Valenciennes lace, and appliquéd net. The lacework is executed with the utmost refinement and delicacy. The center panel is outlined with garlands of satin ribbon flowers.
The condition is almost excellent. The appliquéd net border has darkened with age. I do not consider this a flaw and have not attempted to clean it, since many prefer the original surface. The throw can be cleaned if you wish. I also found a few barely visible mends in the net border.
It measures: 52" wide by 69" long, including the 8"-wide border of appliquéd net.
