#4133 $350
Handmade Brussels Duchesse lace wedding hankie, c.1900
The superb cream-colored handkerchief is embellished with a wide border of handmade Brussels Duchesse lace. Duchesse bobbin lace is a Belgian lace style developed in the 1850s. Parts were constructed separately with filmy linen stitch or half stitch and then assembled.
In Duchesse lace, leaves were often veined with raised oversewn bundles of threads. In the graceful, flowing design of our hankie, bouquets of flowers and leaves are connected by bobbin lace brides with picot edges. The center of the hankie is sheer cotton batiste.
Handkerchiefs vary in value depending on condition and the abundance of handwork. With its fine Duchesse lace, this hankie is one of the best you will see. Less expensive alternatives can be found in the Treasure Hunt section.
The condition is excellent.
It measures 14" square.
