Normandy mixed lace spread, mid 20th century
I realized after I had taken the pictures that I photographed the spread upside down. The smaller panel shown on the bottom of the spread is meant to cover a pillow. I show only half of the large lace spread in the picture above.
Was it my print design background on 7th Avenue that allowed me to take the picture that way? Indeed, the design is as successful upside down as right-side up! Perhaps this is due to the scrupulous symmetry of the harmonious design, which borrows a leaf from nature itself.
The exquisite Normandy lace spread combines the best of the new and the old: it is large enough to be used on a modern bed; while the fine handwork evokes the tranquil elegance of long ago.
The cream colored spread features hand-embroidered batiste medallions surrounded by a mixture of lace and needle-run embroidered tulle. With their baskets of spring flowers, the ruffled tulle borders have a winning charm.
The condition is almost excellent. I found a few small mends that do not spoil the appearance.
The spread can be used on a king size bed.
It measures: 92" long by 78" wide, excluding the 13"-wide ruffled tulle borders.
