#4013 $2,200
Belgian mixed princess lace jacket, c.1900
The fine princess lace used in this superb jacket resembles handmade Brussels bobbin lace at first glance. Princess lace is a great buy if you want the look without the exorbitant expense of handmade Brussels lace. I have sold comparable jackets, made from handmade Brussels lace, for over $3,500.
With its fine lace and gracefully flared back, the cream colored jacket epitomizes the refinement and elegance of the early Edwardian period. The flawless execution of the design motifs (bottom picture) shows lace to be the ideal medium to express the crisp, clean beauty of the intricate designs so beloved by the Edwardians.
The hand-assembled jacket ingeniously combines shaped princess lace petals, straight tape lace, fancy work fill, and Irish crochet medallions with tassels in an artfully textured design.
The shape of the garment is built in during hand assembly of the lace; there are no unsightly side seams. The jacket is gently shaped through the waist and flared below. It is open in front with no closure. The open back vent is so stylish! The long sleeves are finished with shaped cuffs.
An important heirloom quality lace jacket is a welcome addition to any wardrobe. The appeal is timeless and the style is versatile. Wear it with pants or as an evening wrap over a slender slip dress.
The condition is excellent. It is clean and ready to wear.
It measures: 40" bust, 36" waist, 42" hip, 16" from shoulder seam to shoulder seam, 25" sleeve length, and 31" from the shoulder to the hem.
