Flemish bobbin lace tablecloth, c.1700-1710
Bobbin laces developed simultaneously in Flanders and Northern Italy in the 16th century. Thus, it is sometimes difficult to determine the exact origin of a piece. In general, Flemish laces are made with finer thread, making them softer and suppler than Italian laces.
This piece has been appraised as Flemish bobbin lace from Antwerp. The little holes in the design are characteristic of work from Antwerp. This exquisite example of the lacemaker's art is a special find for the serious collector. The Baroque design is extraordinarily beautiful; the technical skilled exhibited is first rate.
The tiny handmade stitches in the lace endow it with a human quality that transcends time, connecting us to the gifted creator 300 years ago. The long reign Louis XIV of France was then coming to an end. In Japan, the great dramatist Chikamatsu Monzaemon was creating his plays for the Kabuki and the Bunraku puppet theater.
The condition is excellent. I found a just few mends in the connecting bars.
It measures 38" square.
